Green Chemistry

The 12 principles of green chemistry sounds amazing. I have never officially heard of these types of processes, although it seems like common sense. Because we have technologies and the capacity to perform steps like this, things like plastic and Styrofoam should be phased out. Although, change takes a lot of time, especially since it is such a huge part of our lives. And manufacturers of these products would also have to change, which could be difficult since money is involved.  It would be beneficial if the government provided more incentives for companies that are using green chemistry.

If something like this were implemented prior to the invention of plastic, the Great Pacific garbage patch might not have existed, along with all of the other environmental impacts these chemicals are having on our health. It is really hard to believe that plastic never breaks down, and that is accumulating on our planet every day.

  1. Stacey,

Within the last couple of years I have been so focused on the idea of prevention as opposed to reaction. The reason is because we so freely spend so much money on reacting to things we could have spent less money and time on preventing. Therefore, this blog assignment was almost like a breath of fresh air.

  2. Hi Stacey,

I'm really glad that you mentioned plastic and styrofoam, these materials do not break down and most styrofoam is not recyclable therefore it will forever pollute our environment. All companies should adopt these principles

  3. Hi Stacey,

You are right, had previous generation thought more about future, we wouldn't be stuck with this current problem. But I think we are on the right path. Recognizing the issue and finding solution to prevent further damage is so important.
